What is a Heartsong journal? I would say that the Heartsong journal is like a dictionary of you, a fun autobiography.

Or as described in this article by Rachel Miller, an encyclopedia of you.

It’s a different kind of journal, not one where you record your daily activities or self reflect with.

It’s a journal about you, by you.

Of course you could start with basic facts – your height, eye-color and blood type – but you can fill it with a lot more interesting things as well.

How to start? By grabbing a blank notebook or journal, because I have lots of ideas!

1. Personality Type

Although there is no real scientific validation, many people (myself included) enjoy taking personality tests.

It could be interesting to record your results – they may change as you change and grow!

One of the most accepted personality typing methods is MBTI (Myer-Briggs Type Indicator)

Another popular test is Enneagram.

Both interesting personality tests to add the results of to your Heartsong journal.

2. The A-Z of You

This is a list where you come up with a word to describe yourself for each letter of the alphabet.

All of the things that make you, well, you.

It sounds easier than it actually is, but I made an example to help inspire you, click on the thumbnail below to view my A-Z list full size.

3. Self Care Ideas

Sometimes when you are upset, distressed or most needful of self care your mind will draw a blank.

You might be so overwhelmed by the things happening in your life that you forget momentarily how to take care of yourself.

A list of your favorite easy self care activities and ideas can be very helpful at this point in time.

4. Your Love Language

There is a very famous book called The Five Love Languages. Each of these love languages are different ways of both expressing and receiving love.

While you may want all of these different languages in your life, the idea is that there is one language in particular you are drawn to.

Another test you can take, online or from the book. The different love languages are as follows:

5. Favorite Foods

What do you love to cook, bake or maybe just eat?

Make a list of your favorites to refer to when you just don’t know what you want.

This could be in the form of recipes or in the form of order numbers.

6. Favorite Quotes

I love a good quote, don’t you?

Quotes can open your mind, inspire you, renew your purpose or motivate you.

Good quotes have a way of making you feel something.

They can give a quick boost to your day by reading or writing them.

But sometimes you forget these quotes when you need them the most.

Write your favorites down in your Heartsong journal so you’ll have them close by.

7. Favorite Books

Books have the power to change you.

Found a book you read and loved? Write the name of the book and the author’s name down.

Books don’t have to be read only once.

They can also lead you to finding your next favorite book.

To quote George R. R. Martin, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies.. The man who never reads lives only one.”

8. Favorite Lyrics or Poetry

Record the lyrics and words that mean the most to you.

Both poetry and lyrics use verses and are driven by emotion.

Not every lyric is a poem, but they can both illicit strong feelings.

Write down the ones that mean the most to you.

9. Prayers

Write down your prayers.

Things can become more powerful when you write them out and you’re less likely to forget them.

If you don’t have a separate prayer journal, you can include them in your Heartsong journal.

10. Mantras

A mantra is a word, phrase or sound that you repeat.

Think of some powerful ones for yourself and write them here.

Return to the page when you need them the most.

11. Compliments

lyrics

This can be compliments that you’ve received from others, but I think it should mostly be compliments to give yourself.

Complimenting yourself is not conceited, it will actually make you feel a little better about yourself.

You don’t want to write down a bunch of things that aren’t true though.

You want to compliment all of the amazing things that are true about yourself.

How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.

Which is why self love should always come first.

12. Trip Plans

You don’t need to have a ticket to start planning a trip.

If there’s somewhere you want to go, start planning it now.

Sometimes the planning of a trip can bring you just as much joy as actually going on the trip itself.

13. Astrology

What’s your sign? You may not believe in horoscopes, but you can probably answer that.

Start with your birth chart.

Your birth or natal chart is basically a map of the skies at the time of your birth. How cool is that?

It’s calculated by when and where exactly you were born.

Though it is usually used for astrology purposes, it could still be an interesting addition to your Heartsong journal.

14. Tarot Readings

While we’re already headed down the path of the mystical or pseudoscientific, I thought I’d mention Tarot cards.

Tarot cards can be used for things like decision making or guidance. They can’t be used for predicting the future.

That being said, a Tarot reading can be very interesting or meaningful to you.

Your Heartsong journal would be a good place to record any results.

15. Watch list

Movie buff or not, you might have a list of movies you’d like to see.

With so many different streaming options it can be easy to get distracted and forget about the things we meant to watch.

You might need to keep a log of all 7 Harry Potter movies – or you might be more ambitious and have an all Disney movie list.

Whatever your list is, just make sure it’s your list.

16. Bucket List

I prefer the term Life List, but we all know what a bucket list is.

It’s a list of all of the things you want to do before you kick the bucket.

A list to write down all of your biggest dreams!

17. Any List

I needed a catchall. If I included every single list you might want to put in your Heartsong journal, this post would never end.

So here’s a quick rundown of more lists:

  • Things that make you happy
  • Favorite memories
  • Important events in your life
  • Your big accomplishments
  • Your little wins
  • Things to achieve
  • Gratitude list
  • Places you’ve visited
  • Places you want to visit
  • Good habits to start
  • Bad habits to break
  • Gifts you receive

18. Collections

Is there anything you collect?

It could be stamps, magnets, shot glasses, toys, nail polish, crystals or anything really.

Regardless of what you collect, we tend to only collect things that we like.

A collection could be huge or it could be small and growing.

Either way, it’s something to write down in this journal about yourself.

19. Seasonal Challenges

Seasonal challenges are fun ways to invite in and enjoy each season.

They can be a way for you to enjoy your favorite seasons to the fullest, but also be a way to enjoy your least favorite seasons more.

Write out one for each season: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Ultimately, how you fill your Heartsong journal is entirely up to you. It’s a journal based reference of you after all. It should be special and uniquely yours.

I just hope that one of these 19 ideas makes it in!

  1. Aw, this was an extremely good post. Spending some time and actual effort to produce a great article… but what can I say… I hesitate a lot and don’t manage to get anything done.
