It’s always a good time to start fresh.
You don’t have to wait for a new year or even a new month. I find it best to have a mini refresh at the beginning of each week. It’s nice to wipe the slate clean and really reset your life every week.
Sunday is the day that I like to use, as well as a day that many people are off of work – but if that day doesn’t work for you that’s fine! Maybe you want to save your Sundays solely for sleeping in and self-care. The day of the week that you choose to do these activities on doesn’t really matter. You can do this on any day of the week that is right for you!
While I have lots of ideas (15 to be exact) you can do as many or as few of these things as you need. Whatever is going to make sense for you. It might be a bit overwhelming to do all of these things at once, or it might be just what you need!
Quick Access
Review your schedule
Take a look at what you have coming up in the week ahead. Any appointments, dates, meetings or just the times you’re working. Make sure you don’t forget anything you meant to do. Pull out (or up) the calendar that you are *hopefully* keeping up with. It might remind you of something that you had forgotten – or maybe something you want to remind someone else of.
Do a brain dump
Or as I like say – a mental inventory. Write down all of the things you need or want to do. Anything that pops into your mind however small or large. Get everything onto the page and out of your head. Consider it a cleaning out of your brain. You no longer have to worry about remembering (or forgetting) anything that you’ve written down.
Set your priorities
Once you’ve brain dumped everything take a look at what you have. What are the important things that you really want to get done this week, and what can wait? Write out your to do list for the week after you’ve made those decisions. Or at least write out your to do list for the day.
Remind yourself of your goals
Take time to remember what you’re working towards, however slowly. If you have a vision board, in any form, really look at it. Small daily steps are important but it can be helpful to zoom out and see the big picture sometimes or to visualize the finish line.
Plan out your meals
This can be anything from just getting a general idea to meal prepping. When you at least have a basic idea of what you’re going to be doing for your meals, you’re less likely to order out or stop at a drive-thru. If you have some time to dedicate to the kitchen today, meal prepping will save you time throughout the week. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate either. Almost anything you make at home will (probably) be better for you than what you’d be ordering or eating out.
Plan out your wardrobe
Deciding what clothes you’re going to wear ahead of time can be a game changer on those mornings when you wake up late. Maybe you just want to pull aside a few tops and bottoms you can pair well together, or maybe you’re more type A like me.. I like to pick out my clothes as well as my accessories for full coordination. I spend less energy on decision making in the morning when I’m getting dressed to leave.
You may also want to pick out your workout clothes and place them out in the open. If you already know what you plan to wear and can see it – you’ll be more likely to put them on and actually do your workout!
Check in on your finances
Check your bank account and see if you have any upcoming subscriptions or bills. Review your budget. Make sure that there aren’t going to be any surprises or overdraft fees. Maybe you are someone who manages their money very well, but unexpected things can come up. You want to be sure that you’re checking your accounts frequently anyway.
Clean out your bags
This could be your purse or your backpack. Clean out your wallet too. If you have a large bag that you carry, you probably know how much random stuff can find it’s way into there throughout the week. I like to carry a small purse specifically to avoid carrying around so much stuff. Having a bag like Mary Poppins sounds great IN THEORY, but in practice.. your shoulders really start to ache.
Empty your inboxes
I mean both e-mail and physical inboxes. Even in our digital world, somehow paper clutter just accumulates. Mail, notes, receipts… Try to to get as close to inbox zero as you can in both. There is nothing like a clean and clear inbox to really wipe the week away
Clean up your physical space
When cleaning up I find that clearing off surfaces is what gives the most dramatic difference, so I would start there. You might also want to take some time to sweep, vacuum or mop. With myself, my partner and our 2 pets – I like to dust every week. You can take this from the very minimum (just throwing the trash away) to the full maximum (a thorough deep clean) or anything inbetween. Whatever you want to do or have time for.
Clean up your digital space
I accumulate a ton of photos over the week on my phone, you probably do too. Or maybe you save a bunch of screenshots on your laptop. Go through your download folders and delete the things that you don’t need. Clear off your desktop and put files away into their appropriate folders.
Clean up yourself
Take some extra time to really pamper yourself. Take the time to deep condition your hair instead of just shampooing it. Consider taking a long shower or bath and exfoliating, or using a face mask. Maybe you like to paint your nails, or get your nails painted. Pick some flowers, or buy yourself a bouquet. You deserve it.
Or maybe you need a different kind of self-care. I have a whole post on how to treat yourself well if that’s something you want to read more about.
Shop your kitchen
Your refresh or reset day may also be the day that you go to the grocery store, but I strongly recommend shopping your kitchen first. What do I mean by this? Take a good look in your pantry, your fridge and your freezer. You may need to organize them to do so. Note what ingredients you already have, and which things need to be used soon. This will help prevent both food waste and you accidentally purchasing an ingredient that you already have.
Have gratitude
Take the time to write out 10 things that you’re grateful for in the past week. Remembering all the little good things that happen can be a powerful exercise. Even if your week wasn’t particularly great, if you really think about it I’m sure you can find 10 things to be grateful for. Even if they are just little things like sunshine, air in your lungs, gas in your car or a roof over your head.
Another powerful exercise is scripting. After you’ve written your first list, then write out 10 things that you’re grateful for in the coming week – but write it in the present tense. Write them as if it has already happened and feel the gratitude for the great week you’re going to have now.
Review and reflect
Take some time to think about the week that just passed. Was it good, or was it bad? Why? Try to think about the things that went well, the things that didn’t and how you can improve the week ahead. Journaling can really help, but isn’t required.
that’s all 15 ideas!
