When the sweltering heat gives way to crisp air, you know fall is here. The fall season invites you to enjoy the simple things and be thankful for the abundance in your life. These cozy habits for fall will help fill your days with warmth and comfort.

Fall is a time when nature is undergoing a beautiful transition. Many animals are starting to prepare for the coming cold. In this post we’ll explore a collection of 15 cozy habits for fall that truly complement the spirit of the season.

Reading

Snuggle up with your softest blanket, get comfortable and pull out a good book. Reading is such a relaxing activity along with a great habit to pick up during any season.

Reading is a great cozy habit to start as an evening ritual before bed. It can be a relaxing way to unwind after a long day and signal to the body that it’s time to relax.

Whether you enjoy reading fantasy or if you’re more into self-help doesn’t matter. Reading helps keep the brain active, it requires more focused attention than watching tv and can help improve your concentration skills.

Stretching

Stretching is such a simple habit that many of us just skip it. Stop doing that. Even just 1 minute of full body stretching can have incredible improvements on both your flexibility and helps release any tension or pain you might be having.

If you are planning on working out, you definitely need to start making stretching a habit before you do. Stretching before you do any sort of physical activity can help improve how you perform. Stretching basically prepares your muscles and joints for the movement you’re about to do.

When done slowly and mindfully, stretching can also be a calming practice and a way to reduce stress levels.

Watching the sunrise

What a good motivation to wake up early and make the most of your day. Starting your day with the beauty of a sunrise not only helps you feel more connected to nature, but can also boost your energy levels.

Watching the sunrise is a simple yet cozy habit for fall to implement, yet can be so powerful. Getting outside in the first few hours after the sun rises can also help regulate your circadian rhythm and make you feel more awake.

Taking walks

Now that’s it’s cooled down from summer, it’s great time to start getting into daily walks. If you live in a place where you can watch the leaves change colors, that’s great. Definitely enjoy the foliage and bask in nature.

Even if you live somewhere that doesn’t have the most exciting seasons, walks outside in nature can be very beneficial. Not only do they add some healthy movement to your day, they can also be very calming. Try to take a walk without the distraction of your phone and just enjoy it.

Baking

Baking might mean heirloom recipe cookies from scratch, or it might be rolling out those premade cookies and sticking them in the oven. Baking is just such a cozy habit to get into in fall, and you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy this activity.

Besides cookies, homemade pies are something that always pop up around this time of year. If you truly don’t have any time to make one with love, your local grocery store will definitely have them available to purchase.

Sipping

I don’t know about you but I love sipping warm beverages. Sipping on something. warming while it’s chilly outside is just such a vibe. Savor and enjoy a warm mug of hot cocoa or spiced tea. This is like the coziest of the cozy habits for fall in my opinion

The act of sipping and savoring a warm beverage can have a calming effect. It might be a soothing tea, a comforting mug of hot cocoa, or just some warm lemon water. Many warm beverages also contain immune-boosting properties and can help soothe your digestive system.

Aromatherapy

Start burning scented, or unscented, candles. Fall scents are especially nice, things like cinnamon, apples and pumpkins. Not only does burning candles provide cozy ambient light, certain scents can also have a calming effect and promote relaxation.

(I feel like it almost goes without saying that you always want to make sure you’re mindfully burning your candles and not just leaving lit candles everywhere while you leave the house.)

Aromatherapy effects can also come from incense or diffusing essential oils. However, in case of fall storms, all those candles can also be useful during a power outage!

Movie Night(s)

Instead of going out, invite some friends or family over and stay in. Or honestly, you could build a pillow fort and have a movie night all to yourself!

Popping your own bags of popcorn is insanely more affordable than buying popcorn at the movie theaters. You can also add your own special ingredients to popcorn (m&ms anyone?) for much less as well as control the amount of salt and butter.

You can also get super comfy on your own sofa with your own blankets – or in a fun pillow fort. There’s also no missing important scenes, because you can pause if you need a bathroom break.

Agritourism

Agritourism is basically tourism that is related to agriculture and nature. There are a lot of places and experiences that fall under this umbrella and many that you can find close to home. There’s no need to travel far, you can be a tourist in your own town.

Fall is the perfect time to walk through an apple orchard, pumpkin patch, or just your local park. It’s when sunflowers start blooming and the leaves begin to turn colors.

Instead of just driving by these places, make a conscious decision to stop and take in the spirit of the season. If you think there aren’t any in your area, search them out! Agritourism also encompasses vineyards, farms and markets. These places also tend to be great for photo opportunities if you happen to be looking for some.

Giving Thanks

Take time to reflect on all of the blessings you have received in your life and all of the things you have to be thankful for every day. Gratitude is a powerful emotion that supports abundance in your life.

Try writing down a few things you are grateful for daily. Start (or continue) a gratitude journal. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Just somewhere you can write down 3-10 things you are thankful for. Get as specific as possible with your lists and try not to repeat the same things too often.

Taking the time to focus on the things that you are grateful for on a regular basis can help shift your perspective. You start to notice more moments and experiences that you are thankful for.

I think writing is one of the best ways to express your thanks, but if you’re uncomfortable doing that you can just think about them. Or even better, let the people in your life that you are grateful for know how you feel.

Trying New Hobbies

Trying new hobbies is great, you don’t know what you really like until you try it! It’s also a simple way to practice stepping out of your comfort zone and expanding your horizons.

Trying a new hobby can also help break things up when life starts to feel monotonous. It can also introduce you to new friends you might not have otherwise met.

Don’t know where to start?

Try puzzles. This could be a jigsaw puzzle, crossword puzzle, sudoku or even a paint by numbers piece. Not only can puzzles be truly entertaining but they’re also great exercise for your brain. A brain that is regularly exercised is one that stays young.

Buy yarn or thread. It’s a relatively inexpensive investment into textile crafts. Check out a video online and learn how to knit, crochet, embroider or even make your own clothes. Maybe you can even sew your own Halloween costume to make it truly unique!

November is national novel writing month, try participating in nanowrimo.

Open Pinterest. You can find more creative projects there than you can do in an entire lifetime.

Just get outside. Walk on a trail, take a hike or go camping.

New Soups and Stews

Hot soups and stews are associated with comfort and coziness during the cooler months and chillier seasons. Trying new soups can introduce you to different flavors, ingredients and culinary traditions. Cooking your own homemade soup can be a lot more cost-effective and you can make it exactly to your palette.

Try a flavor you’ve never had before, make your favorite chicken noodle soup at home or my personal favorite, get your soup in a bread bowl that you can eat afterwards. So yummy.

Eating more veggies

Fall is a great time to incorporate more vegetables into your diet because so many delicious vegetables are in season. Not only does in-season produce cost lest, it also tastes better.

Some of the vegetables that are in season in fall include broccoli, brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, mushrooms, pumpkin and spinach. Those are a lot of different veggies with a lot of different tastes.

Maybe you’re reading through that list and still thinking that you don’t like any of those. If that’s the case, consider trying them cooked a different way. It’s amazing how different ways of cooking certain vegetables changes the textures and tastes so completely.

If you still are sure that you just don’t like veggies – trick yourself. Chop them up and hide them in your foods. Vegetables are essential to a healthy diet and you need to include them somehow, get creative!

Decorating

Seasonal decorating just makes life a little more fun! When it comes to Fall in particular, I feel like there are 2 types of fall decor: natural and Halloween. You usually fall on one side or the other.

If you are super into Halloween – honestly, did you need a reminder to decorate? I’m guessing not. No shade from me – it’s a fun holiday!

But you don’t have to be into Halloween, or any particular holiday, to get into decorating for fall. Just make your space much more cozy than it was during the summer months.

Fall decor generally has rich hues of oranges, reds and browns. You can pull out those chunky blankets you stored during summer and just add a little texture to your space. Also fairy lights always look super cozy.

Boosting Your Immunity

Fall is a great time to invest a little extra into your immunity. Why? It’s the season of colds, coughs and the dreaded flu. Besides getting your flu shot, you can also boost your immunity in other ways.

Simple habits to boost your immunity include getting enough sleep, managing your stress levels and making sure you practice self-care. You also want to try to consume foods rich in vitamin C and zinc to support your immune system.

This isn’t one of the more typical cozy habits for fall, but I promise that the season will be so much better if you don’t get sick!
