We all know the feeling of being stuck inside a negative cycle. The feeling of being unmotivated, of being in a rut and going nowhere.

So, when it comes to getting unstuck in life, where do you start?
Breathe
Start by taking some deep controlled breaths.
Scientific studies show that breath control can help you manage and even reduce your stress.
While you may choose to control your breath during meditation, you don’t have to meditate to feel the results.

Get Up
When you’re feeling like you just want to pull the covers over your head, you usually need to do the exact opposite of that.
Some days just getting ourselves out of bed is the hardest thing we will do.
But you gotta do it.
We think that things will be better if we just stay in bed, but they won’t.
Get Dressed
Get up and get dressed, even if you don’t have anywhere to go.
Put on real pants and real shoes. You know what I mean.
Apply some makeup if you wear it.

Sometimes just the act of putting yourself together can really help you pick yourself up.
Get Moving
Moving your body has been shown to improve your mood and exercising has been shown to help combat depression.
You can start small, like going for a walk outside.

Maybe instead you want to try following a yoga routine.
Or you can just go straight for the sweaty workout to get your blood pumping and the endorphins flowing.
Take Action
Stop waiting until you feel like doing it, just get up and do it.
The easiest thing to do (nothing) is not always the best thing for you.
Set teeny tiny little goals and praise yourself for accomplishing them.

Half of getting unstuck in life is just taking action.
Build up your momentum. Focus on making forward progress. Even small progress is still progress.
Try New Habits
Assess your daily habits and routines.
Are they still serving you?
Adjust as necessary.

Update Your Playlist
Music can truly impact your mood.
Create a new positive playlist to keep you in the right head space.
Or search out and discover a dreamy playlist someone has already made.

Clean Up
Tidy your areas and deal with your mess.
When we get overwhelmed and unmotivated, our physical spaces generally reflect our mental ones.
Sometimes clutter can just be too stimulating and keeps you from being able to relax.
Take the time to clean up your environment.
Clean space, clean mind.

Declutter
Control your environment, control your life.
In general, clutter makes it harder to relax.
It provides too many visual distractions.
Not to mention the frustration of not being able to locate the thing you need amidst all of the other things that you don’t.
In studies, clutter has been linked to lower mental health.
Clear out that old uninspiring stuff to make room for the new.
Rearrange Your Space
Now that you’ve cleaned up you can also try to rearrange your space in a way that makes life easier for you or is just more aesthetically pleasing.
Make some decisions and make some changes. Get inspired and creative with it!
Read
Read a self-help book. Ok, I know sometimes they get a bad rap.
But I personally enjoy reading them for motivation.
Of course, motivation isn’t much without action.
Find something that motivates and inspires you to take some action. It might not be the first book you reach for.
(I’m working on a list of my favorites so keep an eye out for that post!)
Challenge Yourself
You might be thinking that you feel too stuck to challenge yourself to anything – but you’re wrong.
Action doesn’t come from motivation, motivation comes from action.
When we challenge ourselves we make promises to ourselves and fulfilling these promises builds confidence.
That being said, make sure you keep any challenges you want to attempt reasonable and not extreme.
Challenging yourself is mostly just pushing you out of your comfort zone. So what that means for each person is very different.
You could challenge yourself physically, mentally, creatively or even spiritually.
There are so many different things that you can challenge yourself to complete or achieve.
I have a bunch of examples of 30 day challenges already listed for you if you need some inspiration.
Practice Self Love
It can be difficult to feel love towards yourself when you’re feeling stuck but that’s what unconditional love is all about!
Shift Your Mindset
Focus on the things that you can control and try to let go of the things that you can’t.
You control what you think about, what your priorities are, your actions and your attitudes.
But you can’t control other people, the weather, traffic or things that happened in the past.
Stop stressing so much about what you have no control over.

Talk To Someone
There is seriously nothing wrong with needing to talk to someone.
I feel like even as therapy has become something more mainstream, it still holds on to some stigma.
But the great news is that it has also become more accessible to talk to a professional.
Sometimes you just need an outside party with no biases to listen to you.
Keep Going
Stop rereading that negative chapter of your life and flip the page.
A bad chapter doesn’t make a bad story, and your story is far from over.
Keep reading, move forward and get yourself back on track.
Getting unstuck in life can be difficult, but it’s never impossible. Don’t give up on yourself!
